World Mental Health Day, observed on October 10th, 2023, marked a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to raise awareness about mental health issues and promote emotional well-being worldwide. This year’s celebration focused on the theme “Mental health is a universal human right,” highlighting the importance of mental health and the need for de-stigmatizing the topic. Mental health day serve as a platform to spread awareness about mental health, reduce stigma and encourage open discussion about mental wellness
Event Overview:
The Department of Psychology, of Saraswathi College of Arts and Science, Vilappil, conducted awareness sessions, handled by students, about the importance of mental health . The program was kicked of with a street play done by the team from Karunasai De-addiction and Mental Health Research Institute, Vellanadu.
Activities and Programs
The Mental Health Day celebrations at Saraswathi College of Arts and Science, Vilappil kicked of with a welcome address from Mrs. from Karunasai ,followed by a street play done by the team from Karunasai De-addiction and Mental Health Research Institute, Vellanadu. It was organised by Ms. Lekha, Project Coordinator of Karunasai Deaddiction Centre. The team conducted a street play telling the importance of mental health and the different facets that come into play in assuring an individuals mental health. There were group dances, songs and individual showcases by the Karunasai team, the students actively cheered and enjoyed the show. The show came to an end with a small quiz competition where the students actively participated and we’re given minor prizes for each question. The program concluded with vote of thanks from Prof. N Jayakumar, Academic Director, Saraswathi College of Arts and Science and student representative Anjana L.
In the afternoon, the semester 5 students of Department of Psychology were divided into groups of 5-6 and were asked to conduct a small talk on the importance of mental health ,the need for mental health day, tips and tricks to improve ones mental health and the importance of mental health in daily life. Each group was given 20 minutes and each team was asked to do 2 such talks in 2 different classrooms of various departments in Saraswathi College of Arts and Science. Each team prepared a poster showcasing the theme of mental health day celebration 2023, which was shown in classes. The students Talked about the importance of mental health and gave the advise to contact the Psychology Department’s Counselling cell if they ever need help regarding their mental health.
The Department of Psychology also conducted an poster making competition on October 10, as part of their Mental Health day celebration. The competition was open to students of all departments, the program received a high number of support from students of various department , overall it was well received.
